We’re flying the amazing American Photographer and Digital Artist Gilmar (hil-marrrr) Smith in to share her secrets with you in the shoot and edit along 1 day UK exclusive workshop…

I have always been fascinated by people as subjects and with the complexity of their personalities and emotions. Photography gives me the ability to tap into those personalities and emotions through storytelling shaped by light and color, and sometimes, a little bit of humor. I find my deepest sense of inspiration by telling stories that are sparked by the many magical wonders of childhood. My collaborations with my children have molded my photography and have taught me a different approach to my work and my subjects of every age group.

I love working with children.  They are the best creative directors in the world, and I love helping them bring their ideas to life through every stage of the process — from concept to photo shoot to final image. I now utilize the techniques I’ve learned by working with my kids to bring out the inner child of my subjects, and help them get back in contact with it.

During this hands-on presentation, we will work as a group to collaborate on a fun and inspirational theme, create the concept, set up a live photo shoot and create our final image in post-processing that is superbly magical!

Introduction: Identifying & Honoring Your ‘Why’

  • Finding your artistic voice. Finding your why? What inspires you to create? Are you doing what you love?
  • Experimenting. How experimenting with different photography genres can make you a better photographer and help you find your passion.
  • Personal projects. The importance of creating art for yourself.
  • Developing a personal style. How to make your photography stand out from the crowd.
  • Inspiration. What is it, where to find it and why you shouldn’t rely on it.
  • Stages of planning. Mood boards, sketching, and more, and why it is so important.
  • Evolving as an artist. I like my work, now what?

Collaboration: Planning the Photoshoot

  • Coming up with a concept.
  • Creating mood boards.
  • Sketching.
  • Picking a color Palette.
  • Props.

Live Photoshoot: Making Magic

  • The importance of shooting tethered.
  • Directing your subjects. (this is why sketching in advance is important)
  • Making your subjects comfortable in front of the camera.
  • Making sure the lighting matches the concept.

Post-Production: Putting the pieces together.

  • Selections
  • Putting the elements together
  • Matching Exposure, perspective and colors.
  • Color grading.
  • Final touches and special effects.

Delegates should:

– Bring their own camera
– Bring their own laptop loaded with a version of Photoshop (not Elements)
– Ideally bring a computer mouse and mouse mat, to make fine adjustment of images easier
– Feel comfortable working in Photoshop Layers

Our Experts Credentials:

Gilmar is a photographer and Photoshop artist specializing in creative portraiture. She’s not a fan of writing about herself in third person but she’s regularly asked to do so. Gilmar enjoys creating magical worlds and adding pixie dust to her images in Photoshop. Her style is colorful, expressive and humorous. When she’s not photographing or editing her images, you can find her writing content for magazines and websites, teaching workshops, talking nonstop to everybody that crosses path or in a Disney Park with her two kiddos.
