Coloured Gel Packs
I’ve been fortunate enough to work together with one of the largest gel manufacturers in the world to pull together these three exclusive gel packs. These packs incorporate all the gels I use on regular basis to create my distinctive coloured gel shots. I have been using LEE filters gels exclusively for over a decade in my photography because in my opinion they make the best products for what I need day-to-day, so when I had the opportunity to put together these packs I jumped at the chance.
Each of the three packs I have available here cover three very different ranges. I have my Definitive Colour Pack that contains my main colours; these are the colours I use for maximum saturation and impact. This pack also includes a few duplicates of the main colours to create specific looks that incorporate side lighting for example where you’d like the same colour on each side.
The Pastels Colour Pack contains a range of subtler tones. This pack is great for when you don’t want colour to completely dominate a shot or you want to just add an accent of colour to compliment certain fashion pieces. This pack also contains duplicate gels of the main core colours.
The Utility Gel Pack is a range of filters that are primarily for more subtler effects. It contains colour balancing gels for daylight and tungsten plus it also contains neutral density gels and diffusion gels. You can either use these gels on their own or in conjunction with the other gel packs.
The Definitive Colour Pack from Jake Hicks Photography has everything you need to start taking bright, bold portrait and fashion images that focus on maximum colour saturation.

The Definitive Colour Pack contains one of each of the core colours needed to get you shooting in any situation that requires maximum saturation in your images. This pack also contains duplicate gels of the most commonly used colours by Jake Hicks to create his signature looks.

The Pastels Colour Pack offers a subtler look over the saturation provided by the Definitive Colour Pack and Jake will often use these hand picked tones to accentuate the colours of fashion and environment already present in an image. This softer colour look can be perfect for setting a tone or a mood of an image.
The Pastels Colour Pack of LEE filters is a perfect addition to the Definitive Colour Pack or as a Strong set of colours in its own right. The Pastels Colour Pack offers a subtler colour look.
This Pack Contains:
2x Mint Green
2x Powder Blue
2x Lilac
2x Rose Pink

Some Frequently Asked Questions
So why use LEE filters gels over other gels?
Well it may be easy to think that gels are all the same, after all its just a little bit of plastic right? Unfortunately thats not the case, but take it from somebody who has probably used more gels than most that LEE filters certainly produces a superior product. One of the most important differences with LEE filters is the thickness of their gels, the extra thickness in their gels gives me a much richer and more even colour spread with far less of a ‘hotspot’ over the cheaper thiner gels. The added benefit of this extra thickness is obviously durability and when you’re having to use the gels with your modelling bulbs on, thinner gels can warp, buckle and even burn-through very quickly indeed.
Okay so LEE filters obviously know what they’re doing but what’s so special about your coloured gel packs Jake?
LEE filters is one of the largest gel manufactures in the world and as with most gel manufactures they specialise in gels for stage lighting, TV shows and big films so they make these gels on massive rolls and usually tend to sell them like that to. For us photographers we don’t tend to need huge rolls of twenty different colours as that can get pretty costly very quickly. What I’ve been able to put together here are packs of smaller sheets specifically designed for both strobes and speedlights. Also LEE filters makes upwards of nearly a thousand different gels so knowing where to start and what colours to go for can be a bit daunting to begin with. The packs that I’ve put together use colours that I use regularly to provide maximum colour saturation and that work well in conjunction with one another based on strong colour theory and years of trial and error.
Awesome that sounds fantastic, but can I only use them on studio strobes or are they fine to use on my speedlights to?
Yes you can use them on your speedlights and any other flashgun as well as your studio strobes. The size of each of the sheets is 10’x12″ (255mmx305mm approx.) so you could even cut a strip off the bottom of them and use that for your speedlights and still have a large enough gel left for your strobe.
