Entry requirements

No previous experience is necessary, the course will be individually adapted to suit all levels of experience from beginner to experienced.

What will I learn?

During the photo projects & storytelling masterclass you’ll learn how to put together an exhibition ready body of work. The start of the course covers deciding what project to work on, what tools, meanings and considerations you will need to get started. The course then covers different photography techniques and  supports you in taking the next step beyond taking technically good images towards putting together a body of work which tells compelling and powerful stories to your audience. Further week by week details on course content is outlined below.

The overall course aims are to enrich your photography by exploring the exciting world of photography projects. The benefits of the course is that under the watchful gaze of your tutor you will be able to in your small group work discuss ideas and gain artistic inspiration.

Regardless if you’re a beginner or a veteran photographer, this workshop will energize you, provide incredible insight, and the tools to advance your photography proficiency.

– Photography projects explained
– How to write a project proposal
– How professional storytellers to tell a story (and how we as photographers can use it to our advantage)
– Mistakes that lead to poorly structured photography projects
– Curating images – keep your audience engaged and your story true
– Development of a meaningful well considered project with ongoing support

Course schedule

Week 1 – Introduction
– What is a photography project – general definition + nuances and basic understandings
– Projects around the world – inspiration, and references for the future
– How to write a research proposal / project – what a photographer needs to know and understand before going out into the field

Week 2 – Review of research proposals
– The modern photographer – what photographers must understand about the industry today and what is expected of them in terms of target audience / magazine editors
– How to tell a story – classic structure + adaptation to the world of photography and series)
– How media utilizes / consumes photography projects

Week 4 – Idea submission:
– Submission of a partial project and discussion on how to develop it (rough material from the content topic)
– The artist’s work on himself (a discourse on the world of creation and art on a practical level, rules and rules that photographers can use to improve their ability to judge their works and improve their accessibility to the world)

Week 5 – 1 to 1 Project review and mentoring:
– An hour-long 1-on-1 conversation. Let’s go over your personal project together and examine it as a hunt.

Week 8 – Present your project:
Submission of a final project and joint audit
– Let’s talk business – you have a photography project .. so what do you do with it now? How can we try to publish your works in the future or utilize them in various forms in the media

Week 14 – Group progress review and support:
– An opportunity to share your progress, experience and growth to date with the group and see fresh ideas and energy.

 

Course Delivery

You will study through supported online learning using Amersham Studio’s virtual learning environment delivered via Zoom

Part-time (structured) online supported learning

The course will be split into 6 parts over the course of one term with an intimate class of no more than six students. This provides time for you to work on your own projects and learn through group critical analysis on what needs focus and development.

There are a variety of teaching and learning methods throughout the course, including: presentations, group work, and case study analysis. The assignments are designed to be applied to your own specific photography professional practice.

Each group will have the opportunity to join a specific group chat to communicate, bond and share artistic ideas.

Our Educators Credentials:

The photo projects & storytelling masterclass + mentoring course will be delivered by Asher Svidensky. Asher  is a freelance photographer specializing in art and documentary photography with a strong passion for mixing the two with storytelling.

Asher’s photography career began whilst conscripted into the Israeli military between 2009-2012 where he was fortunate to be able to serve as a photographer. After completing military service, he picked up a bag, a camera, and followed his life-long dream to be a documentary photographer. Since then Asher’s body of work has been published in magazines and newspapers around the world, including the BBC (TV, radio and website), National Geographic (USA), The Guardian (UK), GEO (Germany & France), AD (Netherlands) and many more. Asher is an experienced educator who lectures internationally in venues such as Oxford’s Natural History Museum (UK) and MGM Hotel (Macau), as well as being invited to speak on two separate TEDx talks on the topics of photography and the art of storytelling.

Amersham Studios is based in the UK. As the course is delivered virtually, the course is also open to overseas participants. Please note the course is delivered in English.
