Is this for me?

This is an amazing UK exclusive opportunity to spend the day learning the secrets of an international world class photographer and storyteller; Asher Svidensky; who’s worked with clients including National Geographic, BBC, Ted and the Guardian.

You’ll learn how to put together photography projects. Acquire new tools that will help you grow your approach to documentary and cultural photography alongside learning how you can try to get get your future projects published

“After 3 years of service as a military photographer and about a year of doing mostly commercial work in PR and fashion – I decided to leave everything I had behind and set off on a journey to Central Asia – hoping to chase my dream of working as a documentary storyteller.

That journey has led me into developing my current career as a traveling documentary photographer, focusing exclusively on creating my own photography project. Since 2013 my work has been published on the world stage through National Geographic, BBC, TEDx, Oxford museum and many other media outlets and stages. Through that journey, and the many others which followed, I will share with you the experiences and lessons I learned about the art of photography. Talking mostly about the technical and artistic challenges faced by many professional and amateur photographers today.

The second part of the workshop we will mainly focus on the world of photography projects, storytelling and the way the documentary photography has developed over the past years. It’s important to remember that while the status of an individual image (also known as a “stand-alone”) remains relevant today, photographers who truly want to have their work published or get recognition are required to produce something more complex than a single image – What they need to do is to develop their own photography projects.

In this workshop, we will delve into the world of conducting photography projects as a way to achieve a deeper understanding of photography, cultures, people and the art itself.”

You’ll learn:

  • Working with people in / and remote cultures
  • Approaching or stealing a documentary image
  • Recognizing and shedding technical habits that limit you as a photographer
  • Improving your photographic thinking
  • Using the tentative compositions rather than old school predetermined framing
  • How to use photographic language to shape a story
  • Proper storytelling – How a story is being told (practically and properly) and how can photographers use it in their work
  • The 3 main types of photography projects + inspiration to draw from
  • How to try and sell / publish your work in the industry

Delegates should:

– Bring a notepad and pen.

Our Experts Credentials:

My name is Asher Svidensky. I’m a freelance photographer specializing in art and documentary photography with a strong passion for mixing the two with storytelling.

My career began whilst I was conscripted into the military back in 2009 (2009-2012). I was fortunate enough to be able to serve as a photographer. After completing my military service, I picked up a bag, a camera, and followed my dream to be a documentary photographer. Since then my body of work has been published in magazines and newspapers around the world, including the BBC (TV, radio and website), National Geographic (USA), The Guardian (UK), GEO (Germany & France), AD (Netherlands) and many more. I’ve also had the privilege to do lectures about my work in venues such as Oxford’s Natural History Museum (UK) and MGM Hotel (Macau), as well as giving two different TEDx talks on the topics of photography and the art of storytelling.
